Review and further essential information on
    Louis Serrure's atlas of 4 000 weaves

Louis Serrure's atlas of 4 000 weaves is the handbook of weaves which undoubtedly attracts textile people's attention the most, whether they are beginners or experts. Why?

Because weaves are classified by number of shafts. This is a significant advantage for beginners or experienced texile people.

One needs to remain pragmatic. The drawing-in most used in the world is the straight 12 shaft one. Louis Serrure, who was one of the finest technicians from the north of France, did understand that fact.

That is why he classified the weaves by number of shafts and implied that we are frequently dealing with a mounting that has a certain number of straight shafts. This technical constraint is paramount.

However, this atlas needs further essential technical information:

There are almost no explanations on the weaves of the atlas. Some basic or complex weaves lack precisions about the purpose of their weavings. The atlas is in great need of commercial names such as “Honeycomb, Crêpe, Gauze, Corkscrew, Mock-leno, Javanese, Tricotine” etc.

Although L. Serrure was surely acquainted with it, he takes no notice of the basic weaves which are specific to silks (reps, Pékin, bayadère, Ottoman, étoffe à carreaux, cannetillé, Royale, etc.) and which can be found in handbooks such as Cours de théorie de tissage by F. Guicherd and A Handbook of Weaves by G.H. Oelsner.

In his preface to L. Serrure's atlas, Mr Pilisi writes about the enlargement of weaves by mentioning Ernst Gräbner and asserts that the drawing-ins of the atlas are the results of Ernst Gräbner's work. Our suggestion is to clarify this weave enlargement method by giving concrete examples. We will show you the drawing-ins which will make it possible to enlarge weaves without distorting them. Today most weavers work without warp control devices nor lease rods. And because of that, all our drawing-ins (including our “mousse” one with 120 threads/120 picks) fit in with taffeta in order to have the lease at warp-end again, and in order to properly start again with a new warp.

The atlas does not deal with fake effects such as “Houndstooth (pied de poule)” and “Prince of Wales (prince de Galles)”...

For creative people, we will tell them how to easily create a balanced weave.

Given that the atlas dates back to the early 20th century, there are no mentions of “ripstop, seersucker and Panama.”

We will deal with the flaws of weaves from the atlas (crosswise, upright stripes and unwanted diagonals) and deal with the take-up which causes many problems related to dobby weaving creation.

Our goal is to complete Serrure's atlas as clearly as possible with the weaving classics that are missing.
Since the task that we suggest is really substantial and might take several months, we will not hesitate to create links between our website and the PDF document that you will have bought, and to publish a changing online PDF document completed by us and for sale.
All year long, we will inform you of the progress of our works with a newsletter, provided that you make yourself known.
For those who buy the PDF document at the very beginning of our observations and who make themselves known, we will do “update” special prices.
